Book 22: The Subtle Knife

Ahh the middle book. so much said, so much explained and so much left on strings. I have never been a huge fan of the middle book. The writing is almost always phenomenal but the story always drags and I always feel like I'm in a rush to finish it so I can get to the end of our hero's epic journey.

The Subtle Knife was an excellent middle book as far as middle books go. It was dry through the middle and slightly dull until the last 40 or 50 pages but those few pages made the whole book worth reading. We follow Lyra into a new world where she makes new friends and find out how all of the worlds are linked. You discover the reason why the church would really want this series banned and what title the witches gave her.

All in all it was a wonderful book and if you've read the Golden Compass you should definitely continue on with you literature prowl and pick up this book as well, be it at your local library or book buying establishment. I give this book a seven hot air balloons out of ten. Don't pass this one by.
