I enjoyed this book a lot better than Handler's other book that I've read, How We Broke Up. That being said, I still haven't rated this book very highly.
When I think of Handler I often think of Snicket; which leads me to dark humour, quirky stories, and hopefulness in hopeless situations. Naturally, when I found out that he was writing a book about pirates, which is one of my favourite sub-genres, I was really excited. This book, however, was nothing like I imagined it to be and was, ultimately, a disappointment.
I still have mixed feeling about this novel. While reading it, for a long I complained about the lack of pirates and then I wished the pirates never happened. There is something that is particularly disturbing about children acting like adults and killing other people.
Although it was disturbing and not what I expected I appreciated that it followed in a typical Handler style and had 13 chapters.
At best, I found it lukewarm yet enthralling enough to contemplate reading it in one sitting. Handler writes eloquently and weaves a wonderful story, just not the one I expected or wanted
